Description

This dataset contains s set of face-to-face interviews that were performed using a questionnaire (Q1) and conducted by a team composed of sociologists and anthropologists. This main goal was to evaluate the socio-economic recovery in La Restinga after the underwater eruption, which occurred in October 2011.

All interviews took place in the family households of La Restinga using a questionnaire divided into 4 sections. The first one contained different closed-ended questions focused on the housing main characteristics (e.g. type of property, maintenance costs) and the family characteristics (e.g. a number of members, age, level of study, related jobs). The second section was focused on the current household economic situation, with a set of binomial questions (Yes/No) based on the main AROPE (At Risk Of Poverty and/or Exclusion) indicator. The third section contained open and binomial (Yes/No) questions to evaluate the overall household incomes, as their stability. This section asked specifically all the source incomes of all household members, and if they provide from the fishing activity, tourism or both. Finally, the questionnaire Q1 also included binomial (Yes/No) and qualitative inquiries related to the volcano’s impact on the family day-to-day and activities (e.g., studies, family relations), subsidies requested, and their sense of self-economic rebound. Although systematic sampling was planned, and houses were chosen randomly, this was not possible due to the small size of La Restinga and some difficulties in delimiting the population effectively living in the village during 2011 and 2012, as many families left the island in 2012. Final participating households were selected by opportunistic sampling to maximize the number of responses. The total sample obtained was 50 households, where a total of 146 people were interviewed. La Restinga has a total of 539 people over 15 years of age (Statistical Database of the Municipal Register as of 1-1-2018, ISTAC). Therefore, the sampling error is ±6.93 (95% confidence, p=q=0,5), a sampling error that, although it seems high, is not given the size of the population universe of La Restinga. The household analysis of local family recovery (n= 50) included both households and their members (n= 146) and was made with the help of the package IBM SPSS Statistics 22. A further study comparing the families involved in fishing and fishing activities was performed using packages PRIMER v6 (Clarke and Gorley, 2006) and PERMANOVAþ for PRIMER (Anderson et al., 2008).
